Chiro Care Basics

The Science Behind What We Do

What Is Chiropractic? + _

Chiropractic care is based on the belief that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. The brain, spinal cord, and all the body's nerves control these important functions. The skull protects the delicate tissue of the brain. The bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause a malfunction of tissues and organs throughout the body. Doctors call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Vertebral, meaning the bones of the spine. Subluxation, meaning less than a total dislocation. And Complex, meaning consisting of more than one part. Chiropractic is the science of locating offending spinal structures, reducing their impact to the nervous system, and promoting natural healing.

How Does It Work? + _

Chiropractic works by restoring your inborn ability to be healthy. All the body's cells, tissues, and organs are designed to resist disease and ill health. The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate and help remove interferences to your natural healthy state. A common interference is dysfunction of the 24 moving bones of the spinal column. A loss of motion or altered position with these bones can impair the function of the nervous system. This can disrupt the transmission of controlling nerve impulses. With improved spinal function, there is often improved nervous system function. Since the primary focus is improved nervous system function, chiropractic care can have a positive effect on many health conditions not typically thought of as “back” problems.

Is Chiropractic Safe? + _
Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs. A thorough case history and examination help reveal areas of the spine that may be causing nervous system malfunction. This information will be used to determine the best course of care for each patient. Chiropractic care is a natural approach to better health that is proven safe and effective.
What All Do You Do? + _
Helping to restore proper spinal biomechanics and improve nervous system function begins with a case history. This gives us a background about your health, such as any surgeries or accidents, and the onset of your condition, along with other details affecting your current health. After reviewing your history and discussing your specific problem, a thorough examination is performed. X-rays may be taken to help uncover structural and functional problems associated with the spinal column. These examinations help identify areas of spinal malfunction and resulting nervous system deficit. Findings are explained and a plan of adjustments may be recommended. Progress is monitored with periodic examinations and follow-up reports.
How Long Is It Needed? + _
Previously neglected spinal issues may require ongoing care in order to return to optimal function. These long-standing problems are often associated with muscle weakness, soft tissue damage, and degenerative changes to the spine. Most patients find that periodic chiropractic check-ups help keep them in good shape. Those who are active, have stressful jobs, or want to be their very best, find that a schedule of preventive visits are helpful for maintaining good health. Some patients seek care only when their aches or pains becomes unbearable. While this is often more costly and time consuming, we're happy to help all patients, regardless of their health goals. How long you decide to utilize chiropractic care is always up to you.
